Oneida Lake holds the distinction of being the largest lake entirely contained within the boundaries of New York state, boasting an expansive surface area spanning 79.8 square miles. Positioned to the northeast of Syracuse and in close proximity to the Great Lakes, this lake serves as the source for the Oneida River, a tributary of the Oswego River, which ultimately flows into Lake Ontario. The lake itself stretches for approximately 21 miles in length and spans roughly 5 miles in width, featuring an average depth of 22 feet. Its perimeter extends for approximately 55 miles.
Oneida Lake offers distinctive characteristics as it tends to be shallower, resulting in warmer temperatures compared to the deeper Finger Lakes during the summer months. In the winter, its surface freezes solidly, making it a popular destination for ice fishing.
